These are not necessarily reviews but can offer vital information on the latest technological developments and questions about specific issues with devices. These can be useful in providing additional information on issues that are not usually covered in reviews. These sites give us, the consumer valuable knowledge in a world where expertise and experience are paramount to finding the right device.

Recycling Common Electronic Gadgets

Modern life is full of electronic gadgets. Cell phones, digital cameras, camcorders, MP3 players, computers, laptops, monitors and more are common in all modern households. These modern electronic devices provide entertainment and help us in many ways. The problem with them is that they wear out or become obsolete, and then we are faced with the challenge of how to dispose of them.

Simply throwing electronic devices in the trash may be 1 option, but it is an option with a significant environmental impact. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), over 200 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste) ends up in landfills every year. The problem with this is that many consumer electronic items contain harmful materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and more. These materials can pollute the land, water, and air. In fact, according to Earth 911, over 70% of toxic waste found in landfills comes from e-waste.

Some items, such as computers and computer monitors, are banned from landfills and curbside trash pickup. In some states and municipalities, it is illegal to simply throw away such items. So the challenge is twofold, how to dispose of properly to comply with applicable laws, or how to dispose of properly because it is the environmentally responsible thing to do.

Most people are familiar with the recycling of cans, glass, paper, and plastic. They either take it to designated recycling centers at their landfill, or transfer station, or they are picked up through curbside recycling efforts. When it comes to recycling our electronic gadgets, the task becomes significantly more difficult. Unlike cans, paper, plastic, and glass, there is typically not curbside recycling for electronic devices. You also typically cannot simply take such items and leave them at the landfill or transfer station. Thus, recycling our gadgets requires some thought and effort. It is important to know your recycling options for common electronic items.

An excellent option for electronic gadgets that are still in working order is to donate them to someone who can make use of them. Many schools and community groups are happy to receive working electronic items. Schools, for example, often are very appreciative to receive donated computers, peripherals, and monitors. There are even tax incentives built into the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 for companies to donate such items to schools. Cell phones are another item that many community organizations love to receive in donation. In addition, there are national organizations that will accept donations of electronic items. Some organizations that accept donations include:

· Electronics Industry Alliance (EIA)

· Computers For Schools

· Another Byte, Inc.

· National Cristina Foundation (NCF)

· Share the Technology

· Educational Assistance Ltd. (EAL)

· The Wireless Foundation

· The 911 Cell Phone Bank

If reuse through donation is not an option there are numerous programs for recycling unwanted electronic items. Many municipalities will have special days at their landfill or transfer station where these items will be accepted for recycling. There may be a fee associated with these programs.

In addition, many major manufacturers of common electronic items will accept them for recycling, including Acer, Apple, Dell, Epson, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo/IBM, Panasonic, Sony, and Toshiba. Many major retailers also have recycling programs, including Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, and Staples.

For cellular phones, many cell phone manufacturers, and all of the major wireless companies provide recycling programs for cell phones. Most of the programs will accept anyone's cell phones for recycling.

General purpose and alkaline batteries are not considered to be hazardous waste by the US Government. These items may be disposed of with normal household waste except in California where non-households must dispose of them in accordance with the California Universal Waste Rules. Recycling programs for general purpose and alkaline batteries are rare.

Rechargeable batteries may be recycled for free. You may find a list of organizations that accept rechargeable batteries at the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation.

Have you ever thought these two applications were the same? In most Nokia phones today, Active Notes magically replaced the Notes app. Other people have confused the two — and in reality both apps still do exist. Active Notes is usually available in Eseries phones. Other phones, like the N86 doez not have this app and relies solely on Notes.

Active Notes allows you to add some multimedia functionality to your note taking. Active Notes is sorta like the HTML version of the regular notes application allowing you to port multimedia into your computer when you sync. This has been an offering that came with some of the latter phones in ‘08. The Switch app lets you synchronize data between two Nokia phones via Bluetooth or data. Skype for Cisco Interoperable with Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series

Skype for SIP keeps adding more SIP-based IP-PBX solutions to their interoperability list. First they had Shoretel, then SIPfoundry's sipXecs and now today they announced that they are interoperable with Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series for Small Business.

"In today's tough economy, executives of smart small and medium-sized companies realize that effective communications with customers, partners and employees are a key to helping them grow their business," said Stefan Oberg, VP and General Manager of Skype for Business. "By certifying Skype for SIP as interoperable with the Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series, we are providing a single offering that will help many SMBs around the globe save money, save time and stay ahead of the competition."

Modu phone size comparison with E71

Here’s a size comparison between the Modu and the Nokai E71. I was able to acquire the not-so-new Modu unit from Globe telecommunications as they intend to launch this in the Philippines for only P7,999.00. The Modu is a “modular phone” which means that the other features come to life when you attach the small device to several modules such as casings, desk MP3 players, etc. By itself, the Modu is already a full functioning phone, allowing you to make calls and load up music.

I still need to do actual real world tests for the practicality of having a phone like this, but thus far it does not hurt to have a second phone that can turn into a fantastic conversation piece.

Major Blackberry Outage

One of our sales rep's has a Blackberry and his email stopped working. Our MIS team looked at the email settings and they were fine. After contacting technical support, they told us that there is a BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) outage in all of North America. Yikes!

It's enough to make a Verizon Blackberry user want to switch to AT&T. Ok, maybe not...

The app makes its debut at USD$3.99, which IMHO is steep for something you can access on the Internet for free. Here’s to hoping that they do something about the price. Maybe this has something to do with the location-based-services of the iPhone. We’ll see.

We first saw Hillcrest?s air mouse back at CES 2009. At first, it just appeared to be the same kind of thing as a Gyration mouse or a Nintendo Wii remote. However, after getting to test out the Hillcrest Loop for a short time, this is actually quite a different device than those other ones. First, you?ll notice the unique round shape. It?s very unusual for a mouse to be in a ring. Here?s what?s really different about the Loop - there?s no shake. If you?ve ever tried to choose a setting on the Nintendo Wii, you know that in-air devices often include your shakes, so it can become difficult to hit small targets using the in-air pointer.

The Hillcrest Loop was able to hit this small target easily since it takes out your hand’s natural shake.

Hillcrest?s Loop mouse takes out the shake. In a quick test, I was able to choose a show on Hulu from about 5 feet away on a 20-inch monitor. The Hulu show target is quite small, but the device moved smoothly and stayed secure while I selected the text link. Also, you can hold the loop horizontally or vertically and mouse control will remain the same. It actually turned out to be quite the impressive device that could make living room computing a lot easier. If only they would build their tech into a Logitech Harmony remote. The Loop costs $99 on Amazon and is available now.

World?s first Superspeed HD video camera: USB 3.0 is blazing fast

At Intel’s Developer Forum, companies Point Grey and Fresco Logic are showing off the world’s first USB 3.0 streaming HD video camera. The unit streams 1920 x 1080 video at 60 frames per second and streams uncompressed from the Point Grey camera to the Fresco Logic controller. Clearly, USB 3.0 is fast.

“We are very excited to partner with Fresco Logic and be able to visually demonstrate the bandwidth offered by USB 3.0,” says Vlad Tucakov, Director of Sales and Marketing at Point Grey. “One of the potential benefits of the increased bandwidth of USB 3.0 is that it allows the main processor to handle compression. This means that different types of compression can be used for different applications and that some applications, like face recognition, can work on uncompressed video data for increased performance. We certainly see USB 3.0 as a key interface technology for machine and computer vision, and one we plan to integrate into future Point Grey imaging products.”

Allowing applications to pick and choose what definition video is required for processing is a big step forward and would open up things like power saving, faster performance, and better processing. Video is one category that is sure to benefit from the autobahn-like speeds of USB 3.0, but not the only.

Any portable storage device that connects via USB can take advantage of the higher speeds. Even things like iPhones could see a huge boost in sync times (you know, if Apple figures out the quirks behind iPod back up and the other hiccups in syncing). The act of connecting a device and walking away while it syncs could soon be a thing of the past.

FCC Proposes Applying Net Neutrality to Carriers' Wireless Networks

Today, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowsk said that wireless carriers shouldn't be allowed to block certain types of Internet traffic flowing over their networks. This has huge implications for the VoIP industry, since as I wrote last week, AT&T blocks port 5060 (SIP) on their 3G data network, thus blocking VoIP applications. If the FCC mandates that the wireless carriers can no longer block applications on their data network, this opens up the entire 3G/4G wireless network to game-changing VoIP applications!

This will no doubt cause a firestorm of protests from the wireless industry which has invested billions in their wireless infrastructure and they see VoIP as something that will cannibalize their revenue stream. According to Yahoo, "FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said wireless carriers should be subject to the same "open Internet" rules that the agency has begun to apply to home broadband providers."

Genachowski wants to take the same principles the FCC has already been applying to wired Internet trafficand extend them to wireless. Comcast ran afoul of the FCC last year when they started blocking Bittorrent traffic and even slowing down packets to VoIP service provider Vonage.

The Commission previously embraced four open Internet principles affirming that consumers must be able to access the lawful Internet content, applications, and services of their choice, and attach non-harmful devices to the network. These four principles guide the FCC's existing case-by-case enforcement of communications law.

"The Internet is an extraordinary platform for innovation, job creation, investment, and opportunity. It has unleashed the potential of entrepreneurs and enabled the launch and growth of small businesses across America," said Chairman Genachowski. "It is vital that we safeguard the free and open Internet."

In today's speech, Chairman Genachowski proposed the addition of two new principles. The first would prevent Internet access providers from discriminating against particular Internet content or applications, while allowing for reasonable network management. The second principle would ensure that Internet access providers are transparent about the network management practices they implement. The Chairman also proposed clarifying that all six principles apply to all platforms that access the Internet. This is HUGE! This basically means "net neutrality" rules would apply not just to landline Internet access, but wireless Internet (3G, EDGE, 4G) access as well.

Chairman Genachowski will seek to begin the process of codifying the Commission's existing four open Internet principles, along with the two additional principles, through a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) at the October meeting. The NPRM will ask for input and feedback on the proposed rules and their application, such as how to determine whether network management practices are reasonable, what information broadband providers should disclose about their network management practices and how the rules apply to differing platforms, including mobile Internet access services.

"I look forward to working with my Commission colleagues on this important initiative," Chairman Genachowski said. "Commissioners Copps, McDowell, Clyburn, and Baker each bring a unique and important perspective to the complex issues at stake and I look forward to getting their input and insight when we kick-off the rulemaking process next month."

As part of Chairman Genachowski's commitment to openness and transparency, the FCC launched a new website, www.openInternet.gov to encourage public participation. I vote 'yes' on net neutrality applying to wireless carriers' networks. Then I can run VoIP over 3G on my iPhone and life will be good!
